Delve into this Great Opportunity

Competing with Sintra as one of the most charming places in Portugal, Bussaco (or Buçaco) is a treasure located in the country's central region, only 30 minutes away from Coimbra!

Bussaco's National Forest is a Protected Area planted by the Order of the “Carmelitas Descalços”, to whom these lands had been granted – at the beginning of the 17th Century – in order for them to build a spiritual retreat that included a convent.

In 1888, the Portuguese Crown initiated the construction of a Royal Palace at the same location as the convent, which had to be partially demolished in order to make way for the newer Neo-Manuelino styled building.

During this half day tour we will contemplate the beauty of this site while walking along one of the many trails of Bussaco's National Forest. After arriving at our destination we will learn about the existing buildings and its history as well as the local flora and fauna!

Ask for a tailored tour: we will gladly adapt the route according to your personal preferences, allowing you to discover everything you would want to know about the portuguese culture… accompanied by a local guide!

Intimately connected with the history of this region are the Peninsular Wars. From September 27th 1810 the Battle of Bussaco took place, in which the army commanded by General Arthur Wellesley (also known as the Duke of Wellington) got a hold of the offensive Napoleon troops led by Marshal André Massena. We will have the opportunity to explore this area, depending on the interest you have about this specific theme: Windmill of Sula, Battle of Bussaco Obelisk, Militar Museum of Bussaco, High Cross, Shrines of the Way of the Cross (the only Way of the Cross in the world on the scale of Jerusalem!), Houses of the Carmelites in the Forest.

We also suggest a brief lunch stop at this region, where you may appreciate the local gastronomy like for example “roasted suckling pig”, with potatoes fried in olive oil, salad and oranges, Mealhada bread, the famous “Baga” wine and Bairrada's red sparkling wine, as well as the Luso water!
